Paul,
I want to ask you about language? I want to ask you what a memoir is? Do we write memoirs because we are nobodies, we have meanderings to talk about no one would hear. I want to ask you about when we have no words for what happened? Or when all the words are part of what happened? Wir sprechen nicht darüber, was passiert ist. Wenn wir nicht darüber sprechen, ist es vielleicht nicht passiert. Wenn wir die Wörter nicht in den Raum werfen und sie nicht in Sprachelemente umwandeln. I want to know how to break language so it doesn’t break you, or did it anyway? Breakage wie Losreißen, Zerbrechen oder Zerspalten? I want to ask you about breathturns and about when there are still songs to sing beyond mankind. Atemwende. Perhaps I should understand from a condition of no language that it didn’t break you, you broke it and rebuilt it and knew that in us from birth, foamed another spring. I’ve been thinking about writing ourselves into language, imprinting our memories into new words and I wouldn’t be without your poems. I don’t think you’d answer I think you’d tell me about the transpierced. You echoed for me when I read I am monolingual. My monolingualism dwells, and I call it my dwelling (Derrida) and then you say the hundred-/tongued perjury-/poem, the noem. I learned dwelling in my language from you, I can be untrue memoirs remember the witness in the language and the self in the memory of events there is no language for. This is the language I chose. This is the language that was given to me. These are the tools I have to perjure my memories through. Where language curbs. Da, wo die Sprache umlenkt und uns mitnimmt. Pierre Joris recently translated Breathturns into Timestead he realized German had been altered, words had been broken apart and recreated so he had to do the same in English, the poetry that broke and recomposed one language demanded the same happen to any language it is translated into. Noem.
